The city of Lafia, Nasarawa State, came alive on Saturday as the 40th edition of the Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed U-16 Boys’ Football Tournament officially began, marking the first time in over two decades that the youth football showpiece has been staged outside Kano.
Despite a heavy downpour that briefly disrupted the colourful opening ceremony at the Lafia City Stadium, the atmosphere remained electric, with players, officials, and fans embracing the spirit of the game.
The Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), in partnership with the Nasarawa State Government and State Football Association, is hosting the week-long event, which features 20 teams from across Nigeria with late arrivals expected to complete the group line-up.
The competition, launched in 1977 to honour the legacy of the late Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed, has grown into a major platform for unearthing young football talents, some of whom have gone on to represent Nigeria internationally.
This year’s edition promises not only fierce competition but also a showcase of hospitality, as Nasarawa rolls out the welcome mat for teams from as far as Enugu, Borno, Kebbi and Ondo States.
National Technical Director of YSFON, Abdulgafar Agboola, described the event as “a festival of unity and talent,” commending the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule for accepting the challenge of hosting after Kano’s two-decade stewardship of the tournament.
He assured participants of a hitch-free competition, noting the peaceful environment and strong organisational support in Nasarawa.
For the host State’s YSFON Chairman, Suleiman Usman Bako, the moment was deeply personal.
“This is history for us…sports unite people, and today Nasarawa is on the national stage–we are grateful to our Governor and all stakeholders for making this dream a reality,” he said.
The ceremonial kick-off by State FA Chairman Salisu Usman Galadima set the ball rolling, even as the hosts fell 2-4 to Kwara in the tournament’s first match.
With group-stage fixtures already underway and the final set for August 16, all eyes are now on Lafia to see which emerging stars will shine under its skies rain or shine.
