The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kwara State Command, has intercepted 2.318 tons of cannabis, with a street value running into billions of naira, within just one week.

Parading the seizures before stakeholders in Ilorin, the State Commander, Fatima Popoola, said four suspects were arrested in connection with the operation.

She explained that the suspects concealed the drugs among sacks of sawdust to evade detection.

According to her, the interceptions were made during various operations across the state, particularly along the Offa and Omu-Aran axis, between 3:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

Fatima Popoola described the seizures as one of the largest made by the command in recent times.

She disclosed that one suspect, a driver, was arrested with 1.2 tons of cannabis, another with 300kg, while the remaining 720kg was linked to two others.

The NDLEA Boss added that the suspects used Canter trucks, disguising the drugs as ordinary goods covered with sawdust in an attempt to deceive NDLEA operatives at checkpoints.

Speaking on the development, Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his Adviser and Counsellor, Alhaji Sa’adu Salahudeen, commended the NDLEA for its vigilance.

He said the arrests and seizures reflect the government’s commitment to fighting drug trafficking in the state.

Governor AbdulRazaq urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that the battle against illicit drugs requires active support of all citizens.
