The Kwara State Police Command has officially refuted reports of a bandit attack in the Oke-Oyi community, describing the claims as entirely false.
The clarification follows a morning of panic at Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi, where rumors of an armed invasion disrupted academic activities around 9:15 a.m.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the local Divisional Police Officer mobilized personnel to the school immediately upon receiving the reports. A subsequent assessment confirmed that the panic was triggered by an unidentified woman who entered the premises and falsely claimed that bandits were attacking the area.
”The Command’s assessment of the situation confirmed that the report was entirely false and without any factual basis,” the statement read. “There was no bandit attack, no sighting of bandits, and no security breach within the school or anywhere in Oke-Oyi community or Kwara State.”
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, condemned the circulation of the false alert, warning that such misinformation causes unnecessary public alarm and diverts police resources from genuine security duties.
The Command announced that an investigation is underway to identify the individual responsible for the initial false report. Authorities stated that once identified, the person will be summoned for questioning and prosecuted for spreading misinformation and causing a breach of public peace.
Residents are being urged to remain calm, verify security reports through official channels, and continue to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
In a joint effort to verify the security situation, the Executive Chairman of Ilorin East Local Government, Mallam Garba Agbelere, led a high-powered inspection team to the school.
The team, which included the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Forest Guards, and local vigilante groups, conducted a thorough assessment of the premises.
Following the inspection, Chairman Agbelere confirmed that there was no security breach at the school and assured the public that all students, teachers, and staff remain safe.
He further visited the palace of the Baale of Oke-Oyi, Alhaji Salihu Alao Odedeyi, to reassure the traditional leadership of the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area.
